This is a vision indicator selected by the Nordic Council of Ministers. It relates to the target Peace, justice and strong institutions under the area A socially sustainable Nordic region.

This indicator indicates on a ten-point scale how much trust you have in other people in general. The scale goes from 0 which means no trust to 10 which means that most people are reliable. The value of the indicator is the average of the answers of the different respondents. Post-stratification weights (pspwght) have been applied.

Data comes from the European Social Survey (ESS). It is a is a biennial cross-national survey of attitudes and behaviour established in 2001. The ESS uses cross-sectional, probability samples which are representative of all persons aged 15 and over within private households in each country. Social trust is one of many topics covered.

Due to measures implemented to help prevent the spread of Coronavirus, some countries in the ESS Round 10 questionnaire has made use of self-completion methods for the first time, including Sweden. Apart from Sweden, the remaining countries in the matrix have administered the ESS round 10 survey in line with previous rounds, using only in-person interviews.

ESS Round 10 has taken place over a longer period than usual due to the pandemic. Data for the remaining Round 10 participants are expected to be published in early 2023.

In the table, the Nordic Region is comprised of the following countries/areas: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

Åland is included in the data for Finland.
